MAKER WHARF, BETHNAL GREEN PRESENTS

MARKING SPACES

AN EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS AND PHOTOGRAPHS

OPENING: FRIDAY 23 OCTOBER 18:30-20:30

RUNS UNTIL: 23 DECEMBER 2015

MARKING SPACES is an exhibition of paintings and photographs to mark the opening of Maker Wharf, Bethnal Green.

Hosted by the Two Line Collective and Maker Wharf, the exhibition brings together a group of artists from across London. Each of the paintings and photographs exhibited references a space or a place beyond the immediate environment of Maker Wharf. The result is a widened experience of the space, and an interesting interplay between the liminal and actual environments that make up our experiences of spaces and places and which fire our imaginations. Transcending the normal confines of a gallery through its placement in a work space anchored in the local neighbourhood, the exhibition also demonstrates the power of visual art to enhance a space and, consequently, a community.

Please see details of the work and artists featured below. All work is for sale. If you would like to buy any of the work shown please email our curator, Lucinda May, at [email protected] with details of the piece(s) you are interested in.

DOM CALLAGHAN

Dom studied at The Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine art for his BA where he developed an interest in 'the decorative' as a form of art. With a desire to subvert some of the stiff gallery traditions and boundaries and instead to let the artwork become a platform for the viewer to stand on, pattern became a focus. We adorn ourselves and our walls with it and yet it has the beauty and intricacy of an artwork. You Complete This has become a recurring theme and title in his works.

MATT MILLER

Creating an end product that bears integrity to its purpose has always been a source of enjoyment in Matt’s creative direction. Since first learning photographic processing in the lab, photography has been the first choice of his creative expression and visually interpreting a story that holds integrity to his character.

WENDY ROLT

These works were painted for an exhibition based on Wendy’s experiences of London.  Her drawings and paintings are a result of rigorous observation of a city in constant change.  She explores the atmospheres of different areas and spaces, aiming to convey not only the views, but also the spirit of the place and moment.  The work of artists Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff play an important part in her work.

FREDDY GUNN

Due to a an amusing (and mildly problematic) name clash Jonathan Tyrrell now produces artwork under his middle names, Freddy Gunn - the meaning of both Frederick and Gunn allude to the establishment of peace.

Freddy writes, 'I've always been fascinated with cities - the combination of people and buildings. Regardless of their specific location, I hope my images somehow encourage people to look at their urban surroundings with an imaginative eye, spotting the unfamiliar amidst the familiar'.

Having travelled through Europe and North America, Freddy has compiled a unique collection of images, often capturing renowned landmarks in a refreshing light. He's also been commissioned by leading UK advertisers to bring his fresh perspective on urban housing environments.
